"Canoes are usually propelled by staking. For this purpose, batwa manufacture special stakes, which consist of a rough, about 3m. long papyrus tube, in the thick end of which a hardwood fork is inserted (Fig. 102). In order for the wooden fork not to burst the pipe in the event of too much stress, this is wrapped around the fork with bast. This winding is very pleasing to the eye and so ingeniously arranged that it is quite difficult to find out how it is made, for one sees neither its beginning nor its end. On one side of the tube it has the appearance seen in Fig. 103; on the opposite, the bands lie in a field parallel next to each other. Often, for safety's sake, two such windings are arranged, one above the other. I have not seen any similar winding depicted or described in the literature. The original of Fig. 102 has a length of 2.92 m., The span of the fork is 9 cm. The stake Fig. 104 is wound with a centimeter-wide copper band, which the swamp dwellers themselves hammered out; even this fork has a span of 9 cm. and the stake is 297 cm. long." (p. 206, von Rosen, 1916, translated from Swedish).
