"In the case of a successful fish catch, when of course the entire catch cannot be eaten at once, the fish is sun-dried for future needs. However, the drying procedure must not be further effective, for the dried fish generally spreads an odor which is anything but pleasant. This, however, does not concern the swamp people in the slightest; they eat fairly arrived fish with a seemingly good appetite. When the fish is cooked and is to be eaten, it is laid out on a small mat of knotted wooden sticks or pipes; two such mats (Figs. 148 and 149) are depicted here. The original of Fig. 148 has served as a larger serving dish. This rug, which consists of craft sticks, is 53 cm. long and 31 cm. wide. The second laying mat (fig. 149) is smaller, because it has a length of 32.5 cm. and a width of 30.5 cm .; it is connected by thin papyrus tubes. These mats are very practical, because you have a good place to pick them up and bone the fish. This is especially called for by the need, in the case of the often extremely bony fish, which are found in the Bangveolo swamp. The fish is crushed and eaten with the fingers." (pp. 237-238, von Rosen, 1916, translated from Swedish).
