Glove puppet theatre General In åamparison with other forms of puppetry, the glove puppet theatre has a inth shorter \ history in China. According to three major legends, it is • saKyo have originåted in Ch'iian-chou, in the southeastern province of Fukienrmore than 300 yeaå ago. There are two schools of glove puppetry in Fukien,,the Northern and the So thern, distinguished by their use of different musicaYstyle. Little is known abou love puppet theatre after the Cultural Revolutyri (1965-1969) on the mainland. love puppetry still exists, however, both on/the mainland and in Taiwan. The stage may ke a colourful pavilion of wood with an opening of around 60 x 60 cm but with\out curtains. The manipulator(s)/and musicans are found behind the stage. Thstage properties, tables an/d chairs, are like those of traditional Chinese op ra. The glove puppets/are divided, like those of the shadow theatre, into for main groups: Sheng, Tan, Ching, and Ch'ou, representing male and feniskle characters as4ell as clowns or comics. The puppet has a carved ooden head(a shirt with wooden hands, two legs with boots, and a changable dress. ,The show is accompanied by speech, recitations, singing, and music. he libretti are similar to those of the shadow theatre.r» Glove puppets from Taiwan A set of 40 glove puppets (1979.19.1-40) was purchased by the Ethnographical Museum in Stockholmin Hong Kong in 1979\They were originally said to have been made in Fukieri, but they are all, except\one, 'from Taiwan, where glove puppet theatre was by immigrants frun the mainland in the 18th and 19th centuries/ ' The glove puppets, described below, are not exce dingly beautiful or rare, but they, are gootl representatives of an ordinary glove phpet theatre in Taiwan of rather rege/nt date. A few puppets are damaged, headdre s or hair/beard missing and so å. This set of glove puppets is, however, anyhow worth publishing for the sake of comparison with other collections. T garrnents of the puppets are more or less replicas of pa terns, used in the Chinese opera. As the desigriations in the glov theatre, •/ of garments, used the in rppet very much, only a short description of garment q estion might is4ffer uffice . 96 [ocr]
