STENCIL - This stencil was used one night in 2015 to repaint 95 parking bays to be disabled parking. Throughout the 20th century, disability associations worked to adapt society for their members. This protest action in 2015 was done to show there’s still a lot to achieve!

A society with functional obstacles
On the night before 1 December 2015 a coup happened in Gothenburg. With the help of a van, white paint and this stencil, a personal support coordinator company called GIL relabelled 95 ordinary parking bays as disabled parking. Why? GIL explains: “History shows that lasting change doesn’t come from compliance.” Sometimes a bit of provocation and humour is required.
Throughout the 20th century people with non-normative functional variations have fought for their rights to live a normal life. Talking newspapers, special education schools, personal support and housing adaptations are just a few measures that have made life freer and easier for many people. In 1868 what is now the Swedish National Association of the Deaf was founded – today there are more than 60 disability organisations in Sweden working to make society fair and equal. The struggle continues with the same goal as the one formulated in 1972 by what is now the Swedish Disability Rights Federation:
Disability is to a great extent a result of inadequacies in society. Many disabilities can therefore be eliminated. This is done by changing society.

Ett samhälle med funktionshinder
Natten till den 1 december 2015 genomfördes en kupp i Göteborg. Med hjälp av en skåpbil, vit färg och den här stansen märkte assistans-samordnar-firman GIL om 95 vanliga parkeringsplatser till handikapparkeringar. Varför? GIL säger själva så här: »historien visar att varaktig förändring inte kommer ur foglighet.« Ibland behövs det lite provokation och humor.
Under hela 1900-talet har personer med icke-normativa funktionsvariationer kämpat för sina rättigheter att leva vanliga liv. Taltidningar, särskola, personlig assistans och boende passning är några exempel på saker som gjort livet friare och enklare för många. 1868 bildades Dövstumförbundet – i dag finns över 60 handikappföreningar i Sverige som vill göra samhället rätt-vist och jämlikt. Kampen fortsätter med samma mål som Handikappförbundet formulerade 1972:
»Handikapp är i stor utsträckning en följd av brister i samhället. Därför kan många handikapp elimineras. Det gör man genom att förändra samhället.«
