NOTEBOOKS - There have been many housing communes in Gothenburg. These notebooks come from one called »Högst upp«. ---------- Living together “I came home to the kingdom of the flies and washed up after you, my dear. But that’s fine – that’s why I live in a cooperative, I love cleaning up after others. PS do eat some of the food that’s on the hob.” On Erik Dahlbergsgatan in Vasastaden there was a flat whose tenants had lived at close quarters since the 1950s. They shared a kitchen, bathroom and the rent. For the members of this particular commune, called »Högst upp« (At the top), this type of accommodation was a free zone from social norms and an alternative to traditional ways to live. In 2019 the building’s new owners wanted to renovate the flat and the tenants had to move out. One of them, Claudia Kent, describes the commune’s members like this: “It wasn’t 100 % separatist but it was mostly women who lived here – women and trans people… I can’t speak about the commune’s entire history but I do know that most people who lived here were quite politically aware and active.” The notebooks in this exhibition were kept in the commune’s toilet. They contain thoughts and messages about everything from cleaning to politics and love.
