Cup mouth; narrow neck; wide, sloping shoulder; vertical band handle from neck to shoulder; cylindrical body, tapering downwards; stepped disc base. Clay misfired to grey; black glaze; pale reddish brown slip; added white; incisions. Neck, shoulder, inside of handle and most of body reserved; row of bars at base of neck; chain of lotus buds on shoulder; right below shoulder four narrow bands and two rows of dots; to the left on body a warrior (Achilles) pursuing a woman (Polyxena) and a rider (Troilos) to the right; Achilles wears a crested helmet, cuirass, bandoleer, greaves and short chiton and holds a decorated shield; Polyxena wears a white fillet and a mantle on top of her dress; behind Troilos’ horse another horse appears; in front of the horses a fountain with a lion’s head spout; between Achilles and Polyxena and beneath the horses some signs imitating inscriptions; a large, broken hydria lies in front of the fountain; white is used for details on Achilles’ helmet and shield, for the skin of Polyxena and for details on her dress; white is also used for Troilos’ neck-piece, the reins, the horse’s mane and for a cover (?) hanging from the horse’s back; incised details; black base line; on lower body one white band and one reserved; reserved band on edge of base; underside reserved.

A lekythos (pl. lekythoi) is generally a taller, cylindrical vessel with a small, deep mouth, narrow neck and a single handle. However, many variants of the shape do exist, including the rounded, squat form and the ovoid “Deianeira” form, all in various sizes. They were used for the storage of oils and are especially associated with funerary contexts. Towards the end of the fourth century BC they were functionally replaced by the unguentaria.
