The Hierakonpolis boats
Ceramics decorated with boat motifs appear to have been typical for the craftsmen potters of Hierakonpolis. The citytown, which prospered between 3700 BC and 3300 BC, was the first large city town in Egypt and an important religious centre.
The remains of an early royal grave tomb from around 3300 BC were also found in Hierakonpolis. The Its grave walls were decorated with boats and people in different situationsactions. In the middle of the boats are canopies shrines or cabins while the bows are decorated with palm tree branches. In the stern of the boat at the top sits a man steering his the boat with an oar.
The lower left corner shows a man raising his sledgehammer mace to crush other men. The king crushing his enemies is a recurring motif in Pharaonic art.

Båtmotiv på keramik tycks ha varit typiska för hantverkarna i Hierakonpolis. Staden, som blomstrade mellan 3700 och 3300 f Kr, var den första stora staden i Egypten och ett viktigt religiöst centrum.
I Hierakonpolis finns också lämningarna av en tidig härskargrav från ca 3300 f Kr. På väggarna målades bilder som föreställde båtar men även människor i olika situationer. I mitten av båtarna finns kapell eller hytter och i fören vajar palmkvistar. I aktern på den översta båten sitter en man och styr med en åra.
I nedre vänstra hörnet syns en man som lyfter en klubba för att slå ned andra män. Samma motiv, med kungen som krossar sina fiender blev ett ständigt återkommande motiv i den faraoniska konsten.
