Den mumifierade mannen Neswaiu
och hans kistor.
Neswaiu levde i Thebe under det tredje århundradet f Kr.
Hans påkostade kistor antyder att han hörde hemma i de övre samhällsskikten. Det bekräftas av inskriften på en staty som tillhör honom, men som idag finns i Amsterdam.
Enligt statyn var Neswaiu skrivare och präst i guden Montus tempel i Thebe. En stele och en Ptah-Sokar-Osiris-figur som tillhör Neswaiu finns idag på British Museum i London.
På Neswaius omsorgsfullt mumifierade och lindade kropp ligger ett nät av fajanspärlor och ovanpå det ett rikt dekorerat kartonnage, som sitter ihop med en mask som omsluter huvudet.
Texten på den inre kistans lock berättar bland annat att han är son till en kvinna vid namn Takerheb. Den stora ytterkistans svarta färg anspelar på den livgivande svarta myllan
i Nildalen. På lockets insida finns en skissartad teckning av himmelsgudinnan Nut. Hon skyddar och omsluter mumien
i kistan. Liksom hon varje morgon föder solen till en ny dag, skall hon föda den döde Neswaiu till ett nytt och evigt liv.

Neswaiu lived in Thebes during the third century BC.

On Neswaiu’s elaborately mummified and wrapped body rests a net of faience beads. On top of this is a richly decorated cartonnage, that is joined with a mask that covers the head.
The text on the inner coffin’s lid recounts amongst other things that he is the son of a woman named Takerheb. The black colour of the outer coffin recalls the fertile black soil of the Nile Valley. On the inside of the lid is a simple sketch of the goddess of the sky, Nut. She protects and envelopes the mummy in the coffin. As she every morning gives birth to the sun as a new day, so shall she give birth to the deceased Neswaiu into a new and eternal life.
