Outer coffin for Neswaiu, son of Takeretdjehuty.

A massive bivalve anthropoid case, depicting the deceased wearing a tripartite wig and a broad collar with raptor-headed terminals laid upon the chest. The whole coffin has a black resinous coating with painted whites of the eyes and the decoration drawn on in thin yellow-painted lines.

A string of amulets is depicted across the throat, with a ba-bird with outstretched wings forming part of the collar directly below the inner terminations of the wig-lappets. Below this, superposed over the collar, is depicted a shrine-shaped pectoral, containing squatting figures of Osiris, Horus, Isis and Nephthys.

Beyond the extent of the collar, the front of the lid is divided into eight registers, flanked on each side by two columns of text, extending from the bottom edge of the collar to the ankles. The eight registers are as follows:

I. 15 columns of text.
II. Winged solar scarab, flanked on each side by five standing deities.
III. 15 columns of text.
IV. Mummy on bier, with four jars below and ba hovering above,; vignette flanked on each side by five standing deities.
V. 13 columns of text.
VI. 11 standing deities.
VII. 13 columns of text.
VIII. Sun-disk with descending rays, framed by arms emerging from above; vignette flanked on each side by four squatting deities.

The upper surface of the feet has a pair of images of Anubis as a canine, recumbent on a shrine and holding a kherp-sceptre. The toes bear two lines of text, with a ba at either end. The front of the pedestal has 18 short columns of text.

The left side of feet has a single standing anthropoid figure, below which are four squatting deities parallel to the edge of the lid. Behind them, a ba adores the beginning of a procession of thirteen female solar deities who hold ropes pulling the bark of Re, placed on the upper arm of the lid. The bark is adored by another ba on a stand, and carries Thoth, Maat, Hathor, Re, a solar deity and a helmsman. Behind the bark is XXXXX upon a shrine-shaped podium. Short columns of text run from the upper margin of this sequence to the pair of columns of text that border the registers down the front of the lid.

The same situation is found on the right side of the lid, with a similar representation of the pulling of the bark of Re, but with twelve female solar deities, the bark at the foot end and the initial adoring ba on the upper arm; a squatting ape is placed behind him.

The inside of the lid is adorned with a full-face figure of Nut, extending the full length of the coffin, her arms and three strands of hair extended above her head and her limbs and body covered with five-pointed stars. There is a slight depression above Nut’s head to accommodate the nose of the inner coffin.

The lid was affixed to the trough by seven tongues each side of the lid, fitting into corresponding sockets in the trough, plus one each at the head and the foot. The edges of the lid and trough have stepped profiles to allow them to lock together. The long sides of the trough each have a single column of text running from just below the shoulder to the top of the pedestal. The entire length of the floor of the coffin has an image in profile of Nut, standing on a standard, with a column of text running from her waist down to a little above the hem of her dress.

Neswaiu lived in Thebes during the third century BC.
His lavish set of coffins suggests that he belonged to the upper social classes. This is confirmed by the inscription on a statue that belongs to him, which is nowadays in Amsterdam. According to the statue, Neswaiu was a scribe and a priest in the temple of the god Montu at Thebes. A stele and a Ptah-Sokar-Osiris-figurine that belonged to Neswaiu are today in the British Museum in London.
On Neswaiu’s elaborately mummified and wrapped body rests a net of faience beads. On top of this is a richly decorated cartonnage, that is joined with a mask that covers the head.
The text on the inner coffin’s lid recounts amongst other things that he is the son of a woman named Takerheb. The black colour of the outer coffin recalls the fertile black soil of the Nile Valley. On the inside of the lid is a simple sketch of the goddess of the sky, Nut. She protects and envelopes the mummy in the coffin. As she every morning gives birth to the sun as a new day, so shall she give birth to the deceased Neswaiu into a new and eternal life.

Ett massivt tvådelat, antropoid fodral som föreställer den avlidne som bär en tredelad peruk och en bred krage med avslutningar i form av rovfågelshuvuden som ligger på bröstet. Hela kistan har en svart, kådartad ytbeläggning med målade ögonvitor och dekorationen ritad i tunna, gulmålade linjer.

En rad av amuletter är avbildade över halsen, med en ba-fågel med utsträckta vingar utgörandes en del av kragen omedelbart under de inre avslutningarna av perukflikarna. Nedanför denna, överliggande kragen, är avbildad en kapellformad pektoral som innehåller hukande figurer av Osiris, Horus, Isis och Neftys.

Utanför kragens utsträckning är lockets framsida uppdelad i åtta register, flankerade på bägge sidor av två kolumner med text som sträcker sig från den nedre kanten av kragen till anklarna. De åtta registren är som följer.

Den övre ytan av fötterna har ett par bilder av Anubis som en hund, liggande på ett skrin och håller en kherp-stav. Tårna bär två rader med text, med en Ba-fågel på vardera sida. Framsidan av piedestalen har 18 kolumner text.

Den vänstra sidan av fötterna har en stående, antropoid figur under vilken finns fyra hukande gudomar parallellt med kanten på locket. Bakom dem pryder en ba-fågel början av en procession av tretton kvinnliga solära gudomar som håller i rep som drar Res båt, placerade på lockets överarm. Båten är beprydd av en annan ba-fågel på ett standar och bär Thoth, Maat, Hathor, Re, en solär gudom och en rorsman. Bakom båten finns XXXXXX uppå ett skrinformat podium. Korta kolumner av text löper från den övre kanten av denna sekvens till ett par textkolumner som gränsar till registren nedför framsidan av locket.

Samma situation påträffas på den högra sidan av locket med en liknande representation av dragandet av Res båt med med tolv kvinnliga solära gudomar, båten vid fotändan och ba-fågeln på överarmen, en hukande apa sitter bakom honom.

Insidan av locket är prytt av en figur av Nut avbildad med ansiktet framifrån och som sträcker ut sig över kistans fulla längd, hennes armar och tre hårslingor sträcker ut sig över hennes huvud och hennes lemmar och kropp är täckta med femuddiga stjärnor. Det finns en liten försänkning ovanför Nuts huvud för att ge rum för innerkistans näsa.
Locket var fastsatt med botten genom sju tappar på varje sida av locket som passar i motsvarande uttag i botten, plus en vardera vid huvudet och foten. Kanterna på locket och botten har stegformade profiler för att möjliggöra att de passar i varandra. Bottens långsidor har vardera en kolumn text som börjar alldeles nedanför skuldran till toppen av piedestalen. Hela insidan av trågets botten har en bild i profil av Nut, stående på ett standar med en kolumn text som löper från hennes midja ner till lite ovanför fållen på hennes klänning.

Neswaiu levde i Thebe under det tredje århundradet f Kr.
Hans påkostade kistor antyder att han hörde hemma i de övre samhällsskikten. Det bekräftas av inskriften på en staty som tillhör honom, men som idag finns i Amsterdam.

i Nildalen. På lockets insida finns en skissartad teckning av himmelsgudinnan Nut. Hon skyddar och omsluter mumien
i kistan. Liksom hon varje morgon föder solen till en ny dag, skall hon föda den döde Neswaiu till ett nytt och evigt liv.
