In 1798, Napoleon Bonaparte tried to conquer Egypt, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire. That was the beginning of a widespread interest in the pharaonic culture throughout Europe where Ancient Egypt was considered the predecessor of European civilisation.
Egyptian antiquities were collected with great enthusiasm. Swedish-Norwegian Consul General Giovanni Anastasi collected and sold Egyptian antiquities to a number of museums in Europe. In 1826, Anastasi presented Sweden with a generous gift containing coffins, mummies, wall reliefs and a large stone sarcophagus. Initially, the objects were exhibited at the Royal Palace but were moved to the newly established National Museum in the 1860’s.
At the end of the 1920’s, a large portion of the collection was moved to the Egyptian Museum that was then opening its doors in the Old Town (Gamla Stan) in Stockholm. In 1982, the collection was moved to new premises forming part of the Medelhavsmuseet at Fredsgatan 2.

År 1798 försökte Napoleon Bonaparte erövra Egypten, som då ingick i det osmanska riket. Det blev början på ett stort intresse för den faraoniska kulturen i Europa, där man betraktade det forna Egypten som en föregångare till den europeiska civilisationen.
Ett ivrigt samlande av egyptiska fornsaker tog fart. Sverige-Norges generalkonsul Giovanni Anastasi samlade och sålde antikviteter till flera museer i Europa. År 1826 sände han en stor gåva till Sverige. Den innehöll kistor, mumier, väggreliefer och en stor stensarkofag. Föremålen ställdes först ut på Slottet, men överfördes till det nygrundade Nationalmuseum på 1860-talet.
I slutet av 1920-talet flyttades en stor del till Egyptiska museet som då slog upp sina portar i Gamla stan i Stockholm. År 1982 flyttades samlingen till nya lokaler på Fredsgatan 2, som en del av Medelhavsmuseet.
