"In the chapter on babisa I have described a peculiar instrument, which is also in use in balenge (fig. 340). It is called by both these peoples mbira. In an excellent small dissertation on African musical instruments by Dr. Fryklund, however, I see that mbira in some peoples also denotes sensory instruments. Regarding mbiran and its. use, I ask to refer to, what I have already written on page. 345." / see object 1912.06.0496 (p. 417, von Rosen, 1916, translated from Swedish).

"If we now turn to the pleasures of the bisa people, we find that these are the same as those of the swamp people, namely beer, tobacco and hemp. I have described the Bangveolo people's way of brewing beer in the seventh chapter of this work, but I would like to add that the Babis people's tools for brewing beer are of a much neater nature than the batwa. So e.g. the latter use their usual, paddle-like porridge spoons to stir the brew, while for this purpose the babisa make special sticks or ladles and put in considerable work, in order that they may have an appealing appearance (Figs. 240 and 241). Even their beer bowls of burn in ornaments around the mouth. Fig. 242 is a view of a large beer gourd, which is provided with a braid of bast for easier carrying; the ornaments are burnt." (pp. 340-341, von Rosen, 1916, translated from Swedish).

"An interesting musical instrument shows Fig. 249. I have found instruments of this type in both babisa and balenge. It's called by both of these people for mbira. This copy is made up of and 38 cm. high resonant bottom of gourd, around the mouth of which four sticks are fastened with the aid of a resinous substance. Between these pegs, a flat wooden rod is placed in a horizontal position, as shown in the figure. When you hit the wooden stick with a drumstick, it is produced a dull, puck-like tone. The drumstick (fig. 250), which has a length of 29 cm., is wrapped at one end with fabric. Ankermann has described a similar thing in his doctoral dissertation instrument (Fig. 171), which he calls «Totentrommel der Mangandscha». That the mbira drum was also used on other occasions than in case of death is clear from the note I made about this instrument: »Mbira is played when someone dies, and when you have shot wildly and cooks meat. »" (p. 345, von Rosen, 1916, translated from Swedish).
