This pin is made from metal and has a flat head in the shape of a yeouidu (cloud-shaped wish-granting symbol) at one end; the other end is thinning and pointed at the tip, like a needle. The surface has abrasion marks. Called a bitchigae in Korean, this type of pin usually served as a tool for cleaning combs and grooming hair. The bitchigae was an essential toilet utensil for Korean women. The flat, round end was used for cleaning the teeth of combs or for applying hair pomade; the pointed end served as a tool for parting the hair neatly at the crown. Bitchigae could also function as hair ornaments (Korean: dwikkoji) when being put into a chignon (Korean: jjokjjinmeori). Bitchigae that also had a decorative function are generally more ornate and made of jade, agate, or silver adorned with gemstones and enamels. This pin has a tube-shaped sheath that covers the pointed end.
