Function: Probably intended as a lid for a ceramic vessel of a ritual character Acquisition: Bought by Prof. Johan Gunnar Andersson in Paris before 1943. Why this is a masterpiece Very few similar pieces have been found in archaeological excavations in China since the 1930's. We don't know what it represented to the creator, but with its wide-open eyes and mouth, the tattoo-like pattern on its face, the serpent coiling down its neck and the truncated "horns", this head arouses our curiosity. History of the Object Probably this object functioned as a lid of a ceramic vessel. This type of vessel was probably modelled on natural gourds (calabash) as observed by the ethnographer, Karl Izikowitz.
