Världens kammar, Combs of the world

Combs that have been pulled through hair on the heads of many people.
Combs that have removed pests and parasites, or have decorated elaborate hairdos. Combs made of bone, wood and plastic. The oldest comb in the showcase is made of tortoise shell and arrived in the collections 1799 through Anders Sparrman who was one of Linnaeus’s pupils.

Human hair is the conveyor of a lot of symbols and implications.
Sometimes the hair is supposed to be totally covered, whereas sometimes it is let free or it is pruned into strict coiffures. Sometimes the hair is shaved off, as a punishment or to mark the introduction in a new community.

The comb is an intimate and personal item. However, these combs are arranged to form a pattern that is almost abstract in character. Still, in spite of all these variations, an original shape remains to remind us of the comb’s function to get rid of tousles, to make culture out of nature.

Kammen - ett föremål som använts av de flesta människor världen över. Av kvinnor och män, till vardags och fest, av gammal och ung, rik eller fattig.

Kammen tycks ha använts på ungefär samma sätt genom tiderna. Men den behöver inte alltid ha använts att kamma hår eller kanske reda ut skägg med, utan även som hårprydnad eller hår-avlusning. Med lite fantasi kan man föreställa sig vilken av kammarna i montern som använts till vad. Kammarna är präglade av ursprung, traditioner och av lokal materialtillgång. Det ni ser i montern är bara ett litet urval av alla de unika kammar som gömmer sig i museets föremålsmagasin, varav många är insamlade runt förra sekelskiftet.

Kammar av ben, trä och plast. Den äldsta kammen i montern är gjord av sköldpaddsskal och kom till samlingarna1799 med Linnélärjungen Anders Sparrman.

Det mänskliga håret bär på mycket symbolik och laddningar. Ibland ska håret döljas helt, ibland släppas fritt eller tuktas i strama frisyrer. Det händer att håret helt rakas bort som ett straff eller för att markera inträdet i en ny gemenskap.

Kammen är ett intimt och personligt föremål men här bildar de uppsatta kammarna ett nästan abstrakt mönster. Trots alla variationer finns en ursprungsform kvar som påminner oss om kammens funktion: att reda ut det trassliga, att göra natur till kultur.

The comb - an object used all over the world by most people. By women and men alike, for everyday use as well as for festivities, used by the old and the young, rich or poor.

The comb appears to have been used in about the same way all through the ages. Not necessarily always to comb one’s hair or disentangle one’s beard, but as a hair ornament or for getting rid of lice. Using your fantasy you could imagine which of the combs were used for what purpose. The combs are marked by their origin, the traditions behind them and the local supply of material. What is seen in the showcase is just a small choice of all the unique combs hiding in the storage rooms of the museum. Many of them were collected around the turn of the century 1900.
