Neck amphora. Torus shaped rim; splaying neck; a ridge at upper neck and one at junction between neck and shoulder; sloping, bulging shoulder; twin, triple, vertical handles from neck to shoulder; piriform body, tapering downwards; disc base. Pale red clay; black glaze, partly misfired to red; added red and white; incisions. Rim top, neck, inside of handles and body reserved; on neck a chain of double lotuses and palmettes, connected above and below by arcs; at base of neck alternating red and black tongues; A: Dionysos and (probably) Ariadne, seen in profile, are seated on a stool with animal legs; both wear red wreaths; the goddess wears a decorated chiton and himation, the skin of her face and hands is white; Dionysos holds up a kantharos; they are flanked by two dancing satyrs with red beards and tails, the one to the right wears a panther’s skin; in the background a grapevine. B: a young man (possibly Apollon) in dotted himation, red fillet and beard stands in a two-wheeled chariot drawn by four horses with red manes; behind the horses a woman in red fillet (Artemis?), and a deer; Hermes, in short red fillet, petasos, short chiton, mantle and boots, leads the horses. Beneath and beside handles four connected palmettes and three lotus flowers; black base line beneath figures; on lower body a chain of lotus buds and dots, framed by double bands above and below; further below a zone of rays and a black band; underside reserved. Graffiti on underside: ‘D’ above ‘I’ (or an arrow) plus a ligature of ‘L’ and ‘H’.
