The Egyptians believed that the gods could manifest themselves in the form of individual or species of animals such as ibis birds, falcons and cats. Animal cults were popular in the Late Period. Breeding and mummifying animals became a lucrative business for the temples. Pilgrims bought animals that were mummified and presented as gifts to the gods, sometimes accompanied by a prayer or message. The animal mummies were buried in long underground galleries. Sometimes, beloved pets would also be mummified in the hope that it would give them the possibility of an eternal afterlife. Mummified pet dogs, baboons and gazelles, have been found in graves from different time periods.

Djurmumierna begravdes i långa underjordiska gallerier.
