For thousands of years, the Ica region has been home to a variety of unique civilisations, including the Paracas, Nazca, Chincha and Wari. The headwear in the display has been buried in crypts in dry desert sand, low in salt and oxygen, which is why they are still so well preserved today. They are part of a sophisticated tradition of highly specialised textile work along the Pacific Coast. The textiles were made of cotton and wool from alpaca and vicuña, employing a variety of weaving techniques and communicating complex stories of cosmology, memory and myth.
